The Story of Practical Magic 2

A deep dive into the narrative premise, character arcs, the return of Maria Owens’ 300-year-old curse, and how Alice Hoffman’s literary universe fuels the sequel.

Premise Overview

Nearly three decades after Sally and Gillian Owens leaped off the roof of their Victorian home in festive black gowns—finally embraced by the Massachusetts island town that once shunned them—the Owens sisterhood faces its most profound test yet.

Sally (Sandra Bullock) has built a flourishing life running her botanical apothecary, while Gillian (Nicole Kidman) continues her restless travels before being drawn back to their ancestral home. But magic in the Owens bloodline is never dormant for long.

As Sally’s daughters—now grown women—begin experiencing unprecedented awakenings of their hereditary craft, an ancient ripple from Maria Owens' 17th-century curse resurfaces, threatening the lives of those they hold dearest.

The Alice Hoffman Connection: “The Book of Magic”

While the original 1998 film drew from Alice Hoffman’s 1995 standalone novel, Hoffman has since expanded the Owens universe into a sprawling four-book saga. The narrative blueprint for Practical Magic 2 takes inspiration from the 2021 novel The Book of Magic.

In Hoffman's literary sequel, the tragedy that strikes the family forces the Owens women to journey across the globe:

  • Salem and Magnolia Island: Grounding the roots of New England witch folklore and the ancestral Victorian house.
  • London and the English Countryside: Uncovering the ancient European origins of Maria Owens’ magical grimoire.
  • Parisian Alleys and Esoteric Archives: Seeking the rare counter-curses designed to nullify death-binding blood oaths.

The Anatomy of the Owens Curse

In 1620, pregnant and abandoned by her lover on Magnolia Island, the original matriarch Maria Owens cast a powerful spell upon herself: she would never love again. Over the centuries, that desperate sorrow metastasized into an indelible family curse:

“Any man who dared to love an Owens woman was doomed to suffer an untimely, tragic death.”

Although Sally and Gillian broke the immediate manifestation of the curse during the 1998 exorcism of Jimmy Angelov with the help of the island townswomen, deep generational magic often leaves latent roots.

In Practical Magic 2, the curse evolves. It is no longer just about romantic love, but the price of denying one's true nature and the fragile balance between dark and light spellcraft.
