Rebuilding the Victorian Dream: The Iconic Owens House Returns

The Victorian mansion from Practical Magic is widely considered the most iconic house in cinematic history. Here is how the production is bringing it back to life.

Ask any fan of *Practical Magic* what they remember most vividly, and alongside Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman dancing in the kitchen, the answer is almost always: **the house**.

Perched on the windswept cliffs of San Juan Island (built on Whidbey Island, Washington for the 1998 production), the white Victorian dream home with its wraparound porch, towering conservatory greenhouse, and copper-pot-laden kitchen captured the imagination of millions of viewers worldwide.

The Myth of the Original House

What many fans do not realize is that the 1998 Victorian exterior was an architectural shell built entirely from scratch on a County park cliffside over eight months, only to be completely dismantled after filming wrapped to comply with environmental preservation agreements.

The interior sets—including the legendary kitchen with its Aga stove, exposed brickwork, hanging bundles of dried lavender, and the light-filled botanical greenhouse—were constructed inside soundstages in Los Angeles.

Designing the House for Practical Magic 2

For *Practical Magic 2*, production designers face the enviable challenge of recreating this sacred cinematic space while reflecting the passage of thirty years of Owens living:

  1. **A Living, Breathing Apothecary**: Sally’s botanical shop and home garden have matured, filled with rare heirloom herbs, spellcraft jars, and vintage New England apothecary glassware.
  2. **The Preserved Kitchen**: The kitchen table where midnight margaritas were poured remains the beating heart of the home, restored to its nostalgic glory.
  3. **Advanced Eco-Design & Practical Locations**: The production team is scouting scenic coastal Massachusetts and Vancouver Island sites to construct a new hybrid practical exterior paired with state-of-the-art stage interiors.

As production gets underway, anticipation for our first glimpse back inside the Owens house is at an all-time high.
